THE STORY BEHIND

GLOVES BY KATHERINE

Ever since I was little, I’ve been a maker and an entrepreneur. I’ve always taken ordinary things, embellished them and made them cuter. Whether it be puffy paint on my scissors, or when my mom and I would sew ribbons and trims to the bottom of my jeans when I was in middle school. In elementary school I would sell friendship bracelets. In middle school I would collect, clean and sell golf balls that I found in my backyard to the golfers on the golf course we lived on. Around that time, I also created a greeting card line called Rainbows Inc. It didn’t get any farther than a handful of cards but making things and having a business has always been a passion of mine. So it’s not a surprise that when I went to college and started washing my own dishes that I looked at those boring rubber gloves and decided to transform them into what is now Gloves by Katherine.

I started making gloves my freshman year of college at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2002. I would sell them in the school's art sales. They were such a hit that they sold out opening night and I had to sew more for the next day. I could tell by peoples’ reactions that I had created something special.

They were originally named Kat Gloves because I was going by Kat at the time.

I started with dish gloves but quickly added garden gloves to my line at the request of my customers. I eventually added oven mitts in March 2012.

I opened my Etsy shop KatGallery in 2008 when I was in graduate school in Baltimore. I sold buttons and magnets that I would make from maps and old books, magnets made from vintage crystal brooches, little paintings, cake plates and gloves. It wasn’t until May 2012 that I transitioned over to only selling gloves in my shop and changed my business name to Gloves by Katherine.

With the exposure I’ve gotten though my Etsy shop, I’ve sold to 16 countries and have been featured in multiple magazines and other media. My garden gloves have been in Better Homes and Gardens DIY Magazine, Spring 2012, Gardeners on the Go Magazine, Spring 2012, Mother Earth Living Magazine, March/April 2013 and on the TV show Hart of Dixie on the CW channel. Lauren Conrad chose my garden gloves as one of her ten gardening must-haves on her website. My cleaning gloves were featured in the April/May 2019 issue of Country Woman Magazine.

In 2017 I started doing pop-up markets on a regular basis. In 2019, I did 20 shows in one year. And as for 2020, I haven’t let the pandemic stop me!
